Unlock the Alterdesk App with a Fingerprint or Touch ID

The mobile Alterdesk apps for Android and iOS already offered multiple ways to secure the app.

Next to the regular inlog process, two-factor authentication and the option to set a pin code, we have now added another option: fingerprints!

Why use a fingerprint?

Usually, one can attain access to an account by entering a username and password. A pin or fingerprint is an extra way to secure your app when you are already logged in (for example, after closing and re-opening the app).

A fingerprint is easier and quicker to enter than a pin code – you won’t need to enter anything (just remember your pin code as a fallback for your fingerprint) – just use your fingerprint, which you have with you at all times.

Fingerprints are a secure authentication method – simply because they are unique. The technique for scanning and storing fingerprints has also greatly improved the last few years. While former methods of storing fingerprints were cause for some concern, this is no longer an issue: these days, both Android and iOS (Touch ID) do not save an ‘image’ of the fingerprint itself, but a digital ‘mathematical’ signature based on your fingerprint.

What do you need to use a fingerprint for the Alterdesk app?

Naturally, you will need a smartphone capable of scanning fingerprints. This is usually a so-called capacitive scanner. It can mostly be found in the ‘home’ button of your smartphone, or on the back of your phone. Smartphone manufacturers are also working on fingerprint scanners under the display of your phone (Apple was planning to implement this in their new iPhone 8, but recently stated that they have given up on this for the time being).

You will also need the most recent version of the Alterdesk app for Android or iOS. Check Google Play or the Apple App Store for updates.

How do you set your fingerprint?

Follow these steps to set your fingerprint on an Android smartphone:

  5. After setting your pin code, you can scan your fingerprint – unless you have not yet set one. Scan your fingerprint as usual. You are done!
  6. If you had not yet set your fingerprint, go back to your smartphone settings and choose ‘Lock screen and security’.
  7. Go to ‘Fingerprints’. Choose ‘Add fingerprint’ and place your fingerprint on the scanner in a position that feels natural to you. It may be handy to take into account how you usually hold your phone. Repeat this a few times, slightly adjusting the position of your finger each time.

  7. Next you will be asked to adjust your grip to scan the sides of your fingertip.
