We would love to introduce the newest addition to the Alterdesk team: Michelle Spit! Michelle has joined us in August of this year, as our Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).
We have asked Michelle to tell everyone a little about her activities and her expertise.
Welcome Michelle! What is it you will be working on with us at Alterdesk?
At Alterdesk, I mainly focus on the information security of Alterdesk’s products. Information security is (rightly) considered increasingly important by IT companies. Alterdesk believes it is crucial that customers can use its products safely. That is why we want to set up an information security management system (ISMS), based on the Dutch NEN 7510 standard and the international ISO 27001 standard. At the time of writing I am setting up the ISMS, so that information security is top of mind at all times and will be registered properly. At the end of October, Alterdesk’s ISMS will be tested by an internal auditor.
Could you tell us a little about your career thus far?
I am passionate about the good organisation of business procedures. During my studies in International Business I have mostly worked for health organisations (Prescan, Nutricia Advanced Medical Nutrition). After my studies I took a brief detour into the beer industry. Even so, there was no denying my true passion and after a few years I was offered a wonderful job as a policy advisor at a general practitioners organisation.
While working there, I was given the opportunity to draft policies and to help set up digital communication channels (the website, the intranet, an electronic health record). Especially setting up the electronic health record was something I thought was really cool. Creating solutions that ensure that people’s (both healthcare professionals’ and patients’) needs are met to a higher degree is something I really enjoy. When setting up an electronic healthcare record, the security of the system is obviously a requirement. As such, while on this project I have focused on the GDPR and other legislation concerning (medical) information and privacy.
When the development phase of the electronic health record was completed, I was made responsible for its implementation and I collaborated with a colleague to ensure we got the information security certificates NEN 7510 and ISO 27001. We successfully obtained both these certificates.
How would you describe your way of working? What is your expertise?
I work in a very structured way. I like transparency. I also like it when it is clear what needs to be done. I am hands-on and proactive. My way of thinking is solution-oriented and goal-oriented. I am willing to work hard to achieve my goals. Of course, you never achieve goals just by yourself. That is why I think the collaboration with colleagues and other stakeholders is very important. I enjoy achieving things together and sharing this. After all, positive energy is contagious and brings out the best in people.
My expertise lies in my knowledge of the structure of the Dutch healthcare market, communication tools and methods, medical and information laws and regulations and standards in the field of quality and information security.
What is it you like best about your job? What drives you?
What I like most about my work is meeting deadlines and ending up with an activity / result / product that everyone is enthusiastic about. I enjoy improving and / or clarifying business procedures. Communication is very important here. During the process I enjoy transmitting my knowledge to others. It gives me energy to hear people speak about topics I have taught them about. I also enjoy any discussions that follow.
